From 4 to 12 June 2026, Dobczyce became a space for learning, challenge and connection during Nature as a Classroom: The Journey towards Outdoor Education.
This Erasmus+ training course brought together an international group of youth workers to explore how outdoor education and survival-based experiences can support modern youth work. The programme combined experiential learning, group reflection, outdoor safety, challenge by choice and facilitation practice.
A central part of the course was an expedition in Beskid Wyspowy. Participants worked in three responsibility teams - cooking, navigation and safety, and equipment - taking real responsibility for the preparation and implementation of the journey.
The expedition created learning situations that are difficult to reproduce indoors. Participants navigated unfamiliar terrain, adapted to changing conditions, managed resources, prepared meals, made decisions together and supported one another through moments of uncertainty and tiredness.
After returning, we transformed these experiences into learning. Participants reflected on teamwork, leadership, resilience, emotional awareness and shared responsibility, and then designed and facilitated their own outdoor workshops.
The course reminded us that nature is not only a setting for education. It can become an active part of the learning process -a space where people discover their strengths, recognise their reactions and build deeper connections with themselves, others and the environment.
The project may have ended, but its results will continue through new activities, workshops and outdoor learning experiences in participants’ local communities.
