Power of Play - Days 3 and 4

Power of Play - Days 3 and 4: Motivation, Players & Meaningful Journeys

Days 3 and 4 of Power of Play took us deeper into what truly drives people to play-and to learn. The focus shifted from how games work to why they work.

-Motivation in Games:We explored intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and how games can inspire curiosity, autonomy, mastery, and purpose. Participants reflected on how motivation influences engagement and how educators can design experiences that keep learners involved beyond rewards and points.

-Types of Players:Not all players are the same! Through interactive activities, we examined different player types and play styles, discussing how diverse motivations require inclusive and flexible game design. This helped participants better understand their target groups and design games that speak to everyone.

-The Hero’s Journey:Using the Hero’s Journey framework, we looked at learning as an adventure. Participants explored how challenges, mentors, setbacks, and achievements can be woven into educational games-turning learners into heroes of their own development journey.

-Introduction to Gamification:We connected theory with practice by diving into gamification: how to apply game elements in non-game contexts to support learning goals. Participants analyzed examples and discussed how gamification can strengthen engagement, structure learning processes, and support personal growth.

-Key Takeaways from Days 3 & 4:

#Motivation is the engine of learning

#Understanding player types leads to inclusive design

#Stories and journeys give learning deeper meaning

#Gamification works best when aligned with real learning objectives

With fresh insights and growing confidence, participants are now ready to start designing experiences that motivate, engage, and empower.

The adventure continues!
